Carol had been thinking about working in care in Saintfield for a while before she joined Unique Home Care NI.

She was no longer feeling the same job satisfaction in her previous role, and after caring for family, she began to wonder whether care could be more than something she naturally did for the people close to her.

Today, Carol works in Saintfield, supporting clients in their own homes and helping them feel comfortable, cared for and able to enjoy their day.

Thinking about a career in care

Carol’s journey into care started with a feeling many people will recognise, work that felt more meaningful. After caring for family, she began to wonder whether the patience, kindness and understanding she already gave to the people close to her could become part of her working life too.

For many people, care does not begin with a perfectly planned career path. It often starts with feeling ready for a change, wanting more purpose from work, or realising that the way you naturally care for others could make a real difference to someone’s day.

Many people who are well suited to care are already the ones others turn to for reassurance, practical help and a calm presence. For Carol, joining Unique was the step that helped her turn it into a career.

What Carol enjoys about her work

One of the things Carol enjoys most about care work is that every day feels different. No two clients are the same, and that is part of what keeps the role interesting. Some people need support with the practical parts of the day, while others need encouragement to keep their independence or a bit of help getting out and about. Sometimes, what someone needs most is a familiar face at the door, a proper conversation, and the reassurance that they are not on their own.

For Carol, a good day is when a client is happy to see her, when they can have a laugh together, and when she goes home knowing she has helped make a positive difference in someone's day.

That is what makes home care feel so personal. It is not only about what happens inside the house, but also about helping people keep hold of the parts of life that matter to them. Whether that is getting out for a while, staying involved in their usual routine, or simply feeling comfortable enough to enjoy the day in their own way. For Carol, those everyday moments are what make the work feel worthwhile.

Care that feels personal

Good care is never just about getting through a list of tasks. Care assistants may help with personal care, meals, medication prompts, mobility and daily routines, but how that support is given matters just as much.

For Carol, good domiciliary care means helping people feel safe, respected and comfortable in their own home. It means supporting independence where possible, giving reassurance when it is needed, and fitting care around the person rather than expecting the person to fit around the care.

Sometimes that looks like practical help with the everyday things. Sometimes it is gentle encouragement, a familiar routine, having a laugh together during the visit.

Over time, carers get to know the small details that matter and that is what makes home care personal. It is built on trust, consistency and the understanding that good care should support someone’s life, not take it over.

Feeling valued at work

Care assistants are out in the community every day, supporting people in their own homes and often becoming an important part of someone’s routine. The work takes patience, reliability and a genuine respect for people.

For Carol, feeling valued means knowing she is not doing that work on her own. It means having a team behind her, feeling trusted in her role, and knowing the care she gives is recognised.

At Unique Home Care NI, we know that good care starts with good people. When carers feel supported, they can bring more of themselves to the role. They have the confidence to build relationships, take time with clients and notice the small things that make a difference.

That is why feeling valued helps carers feel settled in their work, and it helps clients receive the best care possible.

Carol’s advice to anyone thinking about applying

When asked what she would say to someone thinking about applying to Unique, Carol kept it simple.

“Just do it. If you have been thinking about it for a while and you have a caring nature, give it a go.”

At Unique Home Care NI, we know that not everyone comes into care with years of experience. Some people have worked in care before, while others come from completely different backgrounds. Many have looked after family, worked with people, supported others in everyday life, or simply know they have a caring nature and want to do something more meaningful with it.

For us, the most important thing is not having the perfect CV. It is how you treat people.

If you are kind, reliable, patient and willing to learn, you already have the foundations of good care. We can support you with training, shadowing and practical skills, but a caring personality, a willingness to listen and a genuine respect for others are what make the biggest difference.

Could care be your next step?

Carol’s story shows that care does not always start with a big career plan. Maybe you have cared for family and wondered if you could do it as a career. Maybe your current work no longer feels as fulfilling as it once did.

At Unique Home Care NI, we are proud to have carers like Carol on our team. People who bring genuine care into the homes of the people they support. A big thank you to Carol for sharing her story and giving an insight into what working in care can feel like.
