Amy’s Story: Care, Laughter and Making Time Matter

For Amy, care has always been about helping people keep living life in a way that still feels like their own.

She works mostly around Saintfield and Newtownards, supporting people in their own homes with the little things, the important things, and the moments in between.

When asked what made her decide to work in care, Amy put it simply:

“I loved the idea of helping people live their fullest life still with a little help from us.”

Because good home care is not about taking over. It is about stepping in where support is needed, while still leaving room for independence, personality and choice.

At Unique Home Care NI, that is exactly the kind of care we believe in.

Helping people live fully at home

Amy enjoys the parts of care that make every day feel different. She likes supporting people day to day and helping clients stay independent. She also enjoys the variety, the team, and the trust that comes with working independently in someone’s home.

No two people need support in exactly the same way. One person may need help with personal care or meals. Someone else may need reassurance, companionship, mobility support, or a bit of encouragement to keep their usual routine going.

That is what makes working in care so personal. You are not just walking into a house. You are walking into someone’s life, their habits, their stories, their way of doing things.

Amy understands that. She knows that care is often found in the small moments. The chat while making tea, the laugh during a routine, the song that changes the whole mood of the room.

“A lot of laughter”

When Amy describes a good day at work, it does not sound cold or clinical.

It sounds full of life.

“A lot of laughter, chatting about their life experiences, getting the music on and having a boogie. Regardless if they are in bed or up, you always have the room to wave them arms in the air.”

That is Amy’s personality coming through.

And honestly, it says more about good care than a long list of tasks ever could.

Of course, care assistants support with practical things. But so does the feeling someone is left with.

A room can feel brighter after a bit of music. A person can feel more like themselves after a proper conversation. A laugh can make a day feel less lonely.

That is the part of care that cannot be rushed.

Time makes the difference

One of the things Amy values most about working at Unique is having proper time with clients.

She says:

“If a client wants to sit and feed you endless biscuits and have a chat, you have the time to do that.”

At Unique Home Care NI, our one-hour minimum calls help make space for that. Carers are not expected to rush in, complete a list and leave before a relationship has even had time to form.

There is time to notice when someone seems quieter than usual. Time to listen to the story they want to tell. Time to support the person, not just the task.

For Amy, that is what makes the work meaningful.

“Due to us having more time with our clients, you really are making a difference to their lives.”

Feeling valued as part of the team

When asked what matters most in her working life, Amy said feeling valued.

And you can feel that in the way she talks about Unique.

Amy had worked in other care companies before joining the team. Her experience here has felt different.

“I have worked in a few companies previously to Unique and nobody has valued the staff like they do.”

Care work asks a lot from people. It takes patience, common sense, emotional awareness and a genuine respect for others. Staff need to feel supported too.

At Unique, we want carers to feel they have a team behind them. Not just when everything is easy, but when they need advice, reassurance or someone to check in with.

Amy also speaks warmly about the people she works with:

“The staff are the best bunch to work with.”

That kind of team feeling makes a difference. When carers feel valued, supported and trusted, they can bring more of themselves into the role.

And care feels better for everyone.

“Why haven’t you already?”

When asked what she would say to someone thinking about applying to Unique, Amy did not overthink it.

“Why haven’t you already?”

Amy has found a role where she feels valued, where she has time with clients, and where she can see the difference she is making.

She also said something that really stays with you:

“If and when I have loved ones needing care, this is the place they would be going.”

For anyone considering a career in care in Northern Ireland, Amy’s story gives a real glimpse into what working at Unique can feel like.

It is not about fitting into one mould. It is about bringing your own personality, your own warmth, and your own way of connecting with people.

Could care be right for you?

Care work is not for everyone. But for the right person, it can be incredibly rewarding.

You might enjoy working in care if you like people, if you notice the small things, and if you want a job where your presence can genuinely change someone’s day.

You do not need to be loud. You do not need to be perfect. You do need to care about people and treat them with dignity.

Amy’s story shows the kind of difference a care assistant can make when they are given time to do the job properly.

It might be helping someone stay independent. It might be supporting them through a difficult day. It might be putting the music on and having a laugh when the room needs a lift. That is care too.

Amy’s experience of working in care in Saintfield and Newtownards shows what care can feel like when staff are supported and clients are given time.

We are proud to have carers like Amy bringing warmth, energy and real heart into the homes of the people we support.
