Natasha’s Story: Finding a Rewarding Career in Care

 Natasha and her lovely client
After 35 years working in retail, Natasha had often thought about working in care.

It was something that had crossed her mind many times, but like many people considering a career change, she had never quite taken the plunge. Moving into care can feel like a big step, especially when your working life has been spent in a completely different industry.

Now, after joining Unique Home Care NI and working in the Comber area, Natasha has found a role that feels personal, meaningful and genuinely rewarding.

Her story is a reminder that some of the best carers do not come from a traditional care background. Sometimes, they come from years of working with people, understanding their needs, noticing the small things and wanting to do something that makes a real difference.

Thinking about a career in care after retail

Retail and care may seem like very different worlds, but they have something important in common. Both are about people!

After 35 years in retail, Natasha brought with her the kind of skills that matter in care: patience, communication, reliability and the ability to understand people as individuals.

At Unique, we often say that you do not need the perfect background to make a brilliant carer. What matters most is how you treat people now.

For Natasha, the decision to move into care came after years of thinking about it.

She says:

“I worked in retail for 35 years and thought about working in care quite often but never took the plunge.”

That honesty will feel familiar to many people. You may know you want to do something more meaningful, but still wonder whether you are ready or whether care is really for you. Natasha’s story proves that it is possible to take that step.

What Natasha enjoys most about working in care

When asked what she enjoys most about her work, Natasha focused on supporting people day to day, helping people stay independent, working independently and the variety in each day.

That says a lot about the kind of person who thrives in home care.Working in care is not about every day looking exactly the same. Each client is different. Each home is different. Each person has their own routine, personality, preferences and way of doing things.

For Natasha, a good day at work is about knowing she has helped someone in a way that matters, whether that support is mental, physical, practical or emotional.

In her own words:

“Giving my clients support, whether it be mentally or physically. Knowing that I’ve been able to help my clients gives me great satisfaction. I find my role very rewarding.”

Care work should not be a conveyor belt job, it is about knowing that your presence has made someone’s day feel a little easier, calmer or more supported.

Why feeling valued matters

When asked what matters most in her working life, Natasha said feeling valued.

Care assistants do important, responsible work. They support people in their own homes, often during very personal parts of the day. They help people maintain routine, dignity, independence and confidence. For that work to be done well, carers need to feel supported too.

At Unique Home Care NI, we believe good care starts with good people, but good people also need the right environment around them. Carers should feel listened to, respected and able to ask for support when they need it.

Feeling valued can shape how someone feels walking into work, how confident they feel in their role, and how well they are able to support the people they care for.

Care work that feels personal

Natasha’s story also shows why home care can be so rewarding for people who enjoy working independently. In home care, you are supporting people in the place that matters most to them: their own home.

You are stepping into someone’s routine, their space and their day. The way you speak, listen and support them matters just as much as the practical help you provide.

For someone receiving care, a familiar carer can bring reassurance, confidence and a sense of connection. For the carer, that relationship can be deeply meaningful too.

Natasha’s satisfaction comes from knowing she has genuinely helped her clients., that is what makes care more than just a job.

Could care be your next step?

If you have spent years working in another industry, care may feel like a big change. But Natasha’s journey shows that experience with people, a caring nature and the willingness to support others can be a strong starting point.

You do not need to have worked in care all your life. You do need to care about people, respect their dignity and want to help them live as independently and comfortably as possible.

For anyone considering a career in care in Northern Ireland, Natasha’s story is a reminder that it is never too late to take the step.
