Donna has been part of Unique Home Care NI for almost two years, but her experience of supporting others began long before she joined the team.
Before coming to Unique, Donna spent 17 years working in support services within the Trust. She had also worked in care previously and had personal experience of looking after her grandparent. When her circumstances changed, she began thinking about returning to care in a way that could fit around her family life.
Donna already knew Debbie and Wendy from a previous care company and respected their approach. It was the way Unique was run, and the values behind the service, that gave her the confidence to return. Donna explained,
“I wouldn’t have gone back into care if it wasn’t for the way Unique is run.”
Finding a role that worked around family life
Donna needed work that could fit alongside her responsibilities at home. Night shifts gave her that balance while allowing her to return to a role she found meaningful.
A typical shift begins with supporting several regular clients as they settle for the evening. Donna may help someone get ready for bed before moving on to provide overnight support for another client.
Night care requires patience and a calm presence. It means being there if someone wakes, feels unsettled or needs reassurance during the night. It also means helping families rest, knowing their loved one has support in place.
For Donna, the role works well around her children and family commitments. She feels happy in her job, has built strong friendships and finds real satisfaction in the work she does.
Building relationships with regular clients
One of Donna’s favourite parts of home care is seeing the same clients regularly. As Donna explained,
“Having regular clients means you really get to know them.”
Over time, Donna learns each person’s routines and the way they like things done in their own home. That familiarity helps build trust and allows care to feel more natural.
Seeing clients happy and comfortable at home makes each shift worthwhile for Donna. She knows that being a familiar face can bring reassurance, especially during the evening and overnight when someone may feel more vulnerable.
Those relationships are a big part of why she enjoys working for Unique Home Care NI. Clients are not simply names on a rota, they are people Donna knows properly and looks forward to seeing.
Care is about more than personal tasks
Donna believes one of the biggest misconceptions about care is that it is only about personal care.
“It’s so much more than that.”
For Donna, good care is also about building a bond with someone and helping them keep as much independence as possible. It means understanding when a person needs support, while still giving them the space to do what they can for themselves.
Sometimes the difference is practical. Other times, it comes from conversation, reassurance or simply knowing that someone familiar is there.
Donna believes patience and empathy are two of the most important qualities a carer can bring. Every person is different, and good care means taking the time to understand what helps them feel comfortable in their own home.
Support is always close by
Working night shifts can mean spending long periods out in the community, so knowing support is available matters. For Donna, one of the things that makes Unique different is that help is always close by.
“You’re only ever a phone call away.”
She describes the team as approachable and supportive. If something happens during a shift or she needs advice, she knows there will be someone available to help her work through it.
That support has helped Donna feel confident in her role. She does not feel that she has to manage difficult situations alone, and she knows the wider team is there when she needs them.
The friendships she has made have also become an important part of her experience. She feels part of a team where people look out for one another and understand the realities of working in care.
Encouraged to learn and progress
Donna has also felt encouraged to develop since joining Unique Home Care NI.
Staff are supported if they want to learn new skills, take on more responsibility or explore opportunities to progress. For Donna, that encouragement shows that the company values its staff and wants to help them grow.
It also means carers can continue building their confidence and knowledge while receiving support from people who understand the role.
Unique Home Care NI is an RQIA registered provider supporting clients across Belfast, County Down and surrounding communities. Training and staff development are an important part of helping carers provide safe, thoughtful support in every home.
Donna’s advice to anyone considering care
Donna understands that returning to care or starting a new role can feel daunting. She had worked in the sector before, but joining Unique felt like a completely different experience because of the way the service was organised and the support around her.
Her advice to anyone considering a care role is simple:
“Go for it.”
For Donna, working night shifts in home care has brought flexibility, friendship and the chance to build meaningful relationships with regular clients. It has also given her a role that fits around her family life while allowing her to make a genuine difference.
Her story shows that care is about far more than completing tasks. It is about patience, empathy and helping someone remain happy and independent in the place they know best.
