In care careers in Northern Ireland, people often come from all kinds of backgrounds. Some plan to work in care from the start. Others find their way into it through a change in circumstances, and then realise they have found something that truly matters. That is exactly what happened for Jacci.
After 26 years in care, Jacci still speaks about the role with real honesty. She says there has not been a day in all that time that she has not enjoyed in some way. That is not because the work has always been easy. It is because, even on the hard days, she has always found value in caring for people.

From factory work to a career in care
Jacci did not begin her working life in care. Before joining the sector, she had always worked in factories. When redundancy changed that, she found herself needing to think about what to do next.
At the time, she also had a young baby, so whatever role came next had to fit around family life. She started working bed runs with another care company because it suited her lifestyle at that point. What began as a practical step soon became something much bigger.
Jacci has now worked in care since 2000. Over the years, she has worked with different care companies, built up a huge amount of experience, and seen the role from many angles. Through all of that, one thing has stayed the same. She has always found meaning in the work.
Why care stayed with her
For Jacci, domiciliary care has always been about people. From helping someone with daily routines, to offering reassurance at the right moment, or simply being a familiar face can change how a person feels about their day. Those moments matter and are often the parts of the role that stay with carers long after a shift has ended.
That is why Jacci can still say, after more than two decades in the sector, that there has not been a day she has not enjoyed in some way. Some days are demanding, some are emotional. But for Jacci, the rewarding side of the role has always been stronger.
Jacci’s jump to Unique Home Care NI LTD
Jacci came to Unique because she had worked with Debbie before and knew the values she brought to care, that made the move feel like the right one.
After years in the sector, Jacci had a clear sense of what helps carers do their job well and what helps service users feel properly supported. What stood out to her at Unique was the time carers are given to spend with people.
For Jacci, that is one of the biggest differences. She says Unique feels different to other care companies because carers have time to spend with service users. That means carers are not simply rushing from one call to the next. They have the chance to be present, to listen, and to do the job properly.
What makes Unique different
What Jacci values most is the chance to get to know service users as people, that is where good care begins.
When visits feel rushed, there is very little room to build trust or notice the small things that matter. When there is more time, carers can understand routines, preferences and personalities.
They can offer support that feels more personal. They can build real relationships instead of just completing a list of tasks. That makes a difference for service users, but it also makes a difference for carers. It brings more meaning to the role and reminds people why they chose care in the first place.
Jacci’s advice to anyone thinking about care
Jacci’s advice is simple, “it is worth giving it a go”.
Her own story shows that a career in care does not always begin with a clear plan. Sometimes it starts with a change in circumstances and a decision to try something new. What matters is what you find in it, for Jacci, she found purpose.
