Working in Home Care in Belfast: Jenny’s Story | Unique Home Care NI

Updated: 3 hours ago

Considering a career in home care? Meet Jenny, a Belfast-born carer at Unique Home Care NI whose route into care was anything but typical.

Jenny’s path took her from the Army to hospitality and events, then back home to Northern Ireland to care for her dad after two strokes. That personal turning point helped her discover meaningful work in home-based care.

Jenny’s Journey into Care

Jenny is originally from Belfast, but she left home at 19 to join the Army. She spent 10 years there, building resilience, discipline and the ability to stay calm under pressure. Those qualities stayed with her long after she left service and now shape the way she works as a care assistant and support worker.

After the Army, she moved into hospitality and events. For 20 years, she worked as a wedding coordinator and functions manager in England. It was a busy, people-focused career. She loved the pace, the variety and the chance to meet different people every day.

Two years ago, Jenny came back to Northern Ireland. Her father had suffered two strokes, and she wanted to be closer to home. She was also ready for a different kind of life. After years of demanding schedules, she wanted more family time, more balance and work that felt more personal.

How Caring for Her Dad Changed Jenny’s Path

Caring for her father changed Jenny’s outlook. Supporting someone you love through illness can shift everything, and for her, it brought a new sense of purpose. As Jenny puts it, “caring for my dad was actually how I got into Unique.” What began as family support soon helped her see that care work was about far more than routine tasks.

It was her father who first encouraged her to think about care as a career. Jenny remembers him saying, “you’re such a caring nature, why would you go into care?” That moment stayed with her. What started as time spent looking after her dad became a new direction in life.

Jenny also realised that many of the strengths she had built in other roles still mattered. Communication, patience, reliability and staying calm under pressure all translated naturally into domiciliary care and home-based care.

Why She Chose Unique Home Care NI

Jenny says the welcome she received at Unique Home Care NI made an immediate difference. She met Debbie, our Managing Director, and felt listened to from the start. “The moment I arrived in Unique, I was welcomed, I was respected and I was just treated like an individual for who I am,” she says.

That one-to-one approach mattered. Jenny had worked in places where people could feel like a number. At Unique, she felt respected and wanted. Debbie took the time to talk through Jenny’s background, what she could bring to the company and how care should be tailored to each person.

That matched Jenny’s own values. Unique Home Care NI is an RQIA registered provider, and its approach is built around personalised care, individual treatment and support that helps people maintain dignity and independent living at home.

Life at Unique Home Care NI

One of the biggest positives for Jenny has been flexible working. When she joined, she had the option of day shifts or night shifts. She chose nights, which meant she could still spend time with her father during the day.

That flexibility gave her something she had missed for years: better work-life balance. After a long career in hospitality, where weekends and Christmas were often spent working, the rota felt like a real change. Having Christmas Day with her family again meant a lot.

She also enjoys the rhythm of the role. Even 12-hour shifts can pass quickly when the day is filled with conversation, cooking, baking, companionship and personalised care. For Jenny, the role is active, varied and human.

Just as important is the support behind the scenes. She values being able to ask questions, talk things through and reach someone when needed. In care, where emotions can run high, that support helps carers feel steady and able to give their best.

What Care Means to Jenny

For Jenny, care is about dignity, respect and small acts of kindness. Sometimes that means helping with personal care. Sometimes it means making a cup of tea, sharing a biscuit or taking time for a proper chat.

She believes everyone deserves love, attention and individual treatment. That is what makes care work meaningful. It is not only about helping someone get through the day. It is about helping them feel seen, safe and valued in their own home.

Her story also shows that care can be a strong next step for people bringing life experience from other careers. In Northern Ireland, social care offers rewarding roles for people who care about others and want work with real purpose.
